Getting the Best Out of Matcha Tea

Matcha tea is a powdered green tea. Unlike loose leaf teas, it offers a powerful source of nutrients that are good for the body. Because matcha is a powdered tea leaf, consuming it allows you to ingest the whole leaf and let you enjoy the full health benefits it offers. A matcha drink is believed to have 10 times more nutritional values than brewed water from loose leaf tea.

Processed in a Unique Way

Matcha teas come from a tea plant. When the first few shoots of this plant appear, they are shaded for about three weeks or 20 days to shut out direct sunlight and to minimize the rate of photosynthesis. They are then harvested and steamed.

The leaves are then dried. through a gentle flow of air. When they are almost completely dried, the stems and the veins are removed from the leaves. The grinding of the leaves is the final step in the processing of matcha. For many years, grinding has been done manually on a stone mill. Recently, however, an automated stone mill is used that produces a more refined matcha powder.

Rich in Antioxidants

Matcha has high antioxidant level. It has 137 times more of the antioxidant EGCG than green tea. Antioxidant is essential to the body especially that we store toxins coming from food that we eat and impure air that we breath in. As we age each day, more and more toxins get into our body. Toxins destroy our healthy tissue that may result to degenerative diseases. We need antioxidants that will remove these toxins and maintain a healthy immune system. The antioxidant component in matcha can help restore a strong immune system and prevent diseases.

Promotes Weight Loss

Matcha is also rich with chlorophyll. Studies reveal that chlorophyll promotes weight loss. In a study in 2013, twenty moderately overweight women were given three separate meals once in a week for three weeks. Two of the meals had chlorophyll and the other had none. The women reported reduced hunger after meals with chlorophyll with stable blood sugar levels in their blood tests. This concludes that chlorophyll can indeed help in reducing weight.

Increases Energy Level

A serving of matcha has 70% less caffeine than a cup of coffee. The caffeine in matcha, which is called theophylline, is absorbed by the body in small quantities spread over many hours. This results to a sustained energy for about 4 hours. Because the caffeine is released slowly, there is no feeling of adrenalin rush like that with coffee.

It is also a relaxant. It contains L-theanine that relaxes the muscles and blood vessels. L-theanine also sooths the nerves that causes a feeling of calmness. This also relaxes the brain that helps focusing and concentrating easier to do.

It is Not Just a Drink

A tea is commonly known as a drink. Matcha tea goes more than just a drink. Because it is powdered, it can be mixed with sweets and delicious pastries. If you browse the internet today, you can find a whole lot of drinks, sweets and cakes flavored with matcha powdered green tea. It can even be mixed with dishes. There are matcha puddings, matcha soups and matcha stir frys! These matcha recipes of  sweets and dishes come with a package of health benefits that matcha tea provides and the nutritional values of the other ingredients. Matcha brownies, for example, has both the nutritional components of matcha and chocolate.

Are All Matcha Teas The Same?

All Matcha teas come from a tea plant, Camellia sinensis. When the first few shoots of this plant appear, they are shaded for about three weeks or 20 days to shut out direct sunlight and to minimize the rate of photosynthesis. They are then harvested and steamed.

The leaves are then dried following some steps of drying. When they are almost completely dried, the stems and the veins are removed from the leaves. The part of the leaves that remains, after drying, is referred to as tencha.  Tencha is the raw material for matcha powder.

The grinding of the tencha leaves is the final step in the processing of matcha. For many years, grinding tencha has been done manually on a stone mill. Recently, however, an automated stone mill is used that produces a more refined matcha powder. The finished product is the Matcha Green Tea Powder.

All Matcha teas are processed as described above. Although Matcha originated in China, it was brought to Japan in 1191. It became an instant favorite in Zen monasteries and later used as the heart of Japan Tea Ceremonies.

Today, Camellia sinensis, the tea plant where Matcha comes, grows anywhere in the world. Thus, Matcha can now be sourced from anywhere that grows Camellia sinensis. Matcha teas are generally the same when talking about the chemical components because they all come from the same tea plant. Drinking a matcha beverage, regardless of where it comes from, allows you to ingest the whole leaf providing you the maximum health benefits it offers.

Matcha teas sometimes differ in texture. This may be due to the how the leaves are ground. Still, some differ in color that may result from the process of steaming or the shading of the shoots. These differences affect the taste or flavor of the Matcha tea that may also alter some of its health benefits. Its green color is responsible for the chlorophyll content of Matcha. A pale green may not contain as much chlorophyll as that with pure and bright green thereby offering lesser chlorophyll related health benefits.

While it is true that Matcha teas come from the same tea plant, they may differ in color, taste and texture that result from how they were processed.

Matcha teas are proliferating in the market today. They come from different places. Their cost also varies. The best Matcha tea has a distinctive light green color and a talc-like powder texture. The price for a Matcha tea does not necessarily speaks of its quality. There are premium organic Matcha teas that are best in quality but sold at a minimal price.

Find a Matcha tea with the best quality at a very low cost by visiting Red Leaf Tea today. Check out the differences, in texture and color, with other sources of Matcha tea. You will be amazed to know that Red Leaf Tea has it all with the cheapest price offer ever!

What is a Powdered Green Tea?

I have read quite a number of articles on matcha, a powdered green tea,  and its amazing health benefits. Most are credible, noting that drinking tea is truly a way to live a healthy life. Yet, I wonder how this matcha is being made or processed to become a talc-like powder. What I discover has made me more convinced that matcha is not just a nutritious drink but it is also processed in the most detailed way.

Matcha comes from a tea plant, Camellia sinensis. The first few shoots of this plant usually appear in early April. The best buds are then selected and picked which will be used to make matcha and gyokuro. They are shaded for about three weeks or 20 days to shut out direct sunlight and to minimize the rate of photosynthesis to increase theanine levels, the amino acid responsible for the full-bodied flavor of the matcha and gyokuro teas.

The picking of the leaves happens from early May to the middle of the month. The ‘first flush’ of tea leaves is carefully picked at this time. ‘First flush’ is the year’s first harvest of young leaves. The young leaves have the finest in quality, freshness and flavor.

The steaming process follows. Steaming prevents the leaves from being oxidized and to stop fermentation. Steaming makes the leaves retain their natural green color and nutritional components.

The leaves that will be made matcha are placed in a multi-chambered air machine where they are mildly blown around and cooled using a gentle flow of air.  They are then allowed to dry further by scattering them evenly in a flat surface. When drying is almost over, the leaves are put in a machine where the stems and the veins are removed from the  leaves.

The finished product is the Matcha Green Tea Powder that can be enjoyed in a refreshing and nutritious drink.
